The Rising Demand for EVs in India
Electric Vehicles (EVs) are no longer a rare sight on Indian roads. With rising petrol prices and environmental concerns, many drivers are considering EVs as a cost-effective alternative. But before making the switch, it’s essential to compare EV charging cost with petrol cost to see the real savings potential.
Breaking Down the EV Charging Cost
On average, home charging an EV costs between ₹5 and ₹7 per unit of electricity. Depending on battery size, a full charge may cost ₹300–₹500 and provide 250–350 km of range. Public fast chargers may charge more, around ₹15–₹20 per unit, but even then, the per-km cost is significantly lower than petrol.
Petrol Cost in 2025 – Still Rising
In 2025, petrol prices in India average ₹100–₹110 per litre in most cities. A petrol car with 15 km/l mileage will cost around ₹7–₹8 per km to run. Over a year, even moderate driving can add up to tens of thousands of rupees more than an EV. This cost difference becomes more visible with high-mileage users.
Which One is Truly Cheaper?
When comparing running costs alone, EVs are much cheaper than petrol cars in 2025. Even considering charging station fees and occasional higher rates, the cost per kilometre for EVs remains 50–70% lower. However, buyers should also consider initial purchase price, charging availability, and maintenance before making the switch. In most cases, long-term savings strongly favour EVs.
